Drug deal leads to teen's death after shooting in parking garage near The Domain, affidavit says
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- An 18-year-old was arrested after a 17-year-old was killed in a Dec. 13 early morning shooting at an apartment complex parking garage near The Domain.
Dedric Verse has been charged with capital murder in connection with Carlos Sotelo's death, records state.
A police affidavit obtained by KXAN said Sotelo's death was a result of an attempted robbery that occurred during a planned meetup to exchange a "pound of narcotics" for $1,100.
Verse's attorney Brian Erskine provided a statement to KXAN, "the investigation appears recent and evolving with a lot of questions still to be answered. I’m looking forward to working with Mr. Verse, and am hopeful the truth is revealed after a thorough investigation."
The Austin Police Department identified Verse as a suspect through surveillance video, social media, and a witness's text message records. Through this, they were able to find that the witnesses and suspects had a planned drug deal meeting 10 minutes before the shooting took place, the affidavit said.
While Sotelo and a witness were parked in the parking garage, Verse and another suspect told the victims to "give me all you got" while holding handguns, according to the affidavit. While trying to drive away from the suspects, Sotelo was shot and driven to St. David's North Austin Medical Center where he later died.
As of Monday, online jail records showed Verse is in the Travis County Correctional Complex with a $1 million bond.
