‘Have to play fair…’: Ex-India star labels Rohit Sharma’s side as ‘liars’ following Yashasvi Jaiswal DRS controversy
Former India wicketkeeper Surinder Khanna wasn’t pleased with the Men in Blue’s approach in the Melbourne Test where they ended up losing by a massive 184-run margin. Chasing 340 on the final day of the match, the Indian batters faltered big time and got bundled out for only 155 runs, losing 7 wickets during the final session of the fifth day.
During India’s chase, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s controversial dismissal became a massive talking point. Third umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat overturned on-field umpire Joel Wilson’s decision without any conclusive evidence.
Despite the snickometer showing no spike at all when the ball passed through Jaiswal’s bat, the third umpire ruled him as out as the ball looked to have been deflected either off Jaiswal’s bat or glove.
The decision was not taken well by the Indian camp and former India cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan criticized the technology for not fulfilling the purpose completely.
However, Khanna had completely different take on the topic and suggested ‘there’s no point in making controversy’. He rather asked Rohit Sharma and Co to play fair cricket as only then will they start winning matches again.
“There is no point in making controversy, they’ve shown it from four angles that the ball hit the gloves and its pace also decreased before Alex Carey caught it behind the stumps. Akash Deep also complained of a similar thing when he was caught out. ‘Juthe log hai yeh (they are all liars)’, you have to play fair wicket first then only you’ll start winning. When the bat is in your hand, how can you not know about edging the ball? We have played bad and we have lost. What kind of batting they’re doing? Come the IPL, these players will hit runs. Don’t play over-aggressive T20 cricket and play positively. Let’s hope that the luck changes in the New Year (for the Indian team),” Khanna told IANS.
Following the defeat in Melbourne Test, India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final took a major hit. In order to qualify, the Men in Blue not only have to win the final Test of the series in Sydney but also need Australia to not win any game in their upcoming 2 -match Test series against Sri Lanka.
