WI Women lose final ODI against India

0

West Indies Women lost the third and final One-Day International (ODI) against India Women by five wickets at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium earlier today.

That result confirmed that the women in maroon lost the three match series 3-0 and now sit ninth in the ten-team ICC Women’s Championship on 14 points, having played 21 matches and lost 13 matches.

After electing to bat first, West Indies were bowled out for 162 in 38.5 overs with middle-order batter Chinelle Henry top scoring with 61 runs. India responded by knocking off the target in 28.2 overs, finishing on 167-5.

Openers Quina Joseph and Hayley Matthews fell to the bowling of Renuka Singh for nought inside the first over to leave the visitors wobbling at 1-2. Barbadian all-rounder Deandra Dottin also fell cheaply to Singh for just five runs. With the score 9-3, wicketkeeper/batter Shermaine Campbelle combined with Henry, who was playing her first ODI in this series, to register a 91-run partnership. Campbelle fell four runs shy of a fifth ODI half-century and the batting line-up continued to struggle apart from a cameo of 21 runs from Aaliyah Alleyne.

The chase began inauspiciously for the hosts as West Indies capitalised on the moving ball to dismiss key batter Smirti Mandhana and last match centurion Harleen Deol in the powerplay. Victory looked possible for the visitors when they had India 73-4, with their captain Harmanpreet Kaur bowled on 32 by a skiddy delivery from experienced leg spinner Afy Fletcher.

Middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues and all-rounder Deepti Sharma arrested the slump and changed the game’s momentum with their 56-run partnership before wicketkeeper/batter Richa Ghosh made 23 not out to wrap up the contest.

West Indies Women 162 all out in 38.5 overs (Henry 61, Campbelle 46; Deepti 6-31,

Renuka 4-29)
