The consumer choice group shared a video to TikTok explaining how to properly look after your dehumidifier, and what you should avoid doing when using it.

So, what are the key mistakes to look out for?

Never use your dehumidifier too close to walls or furniture

While using your dehumidifier, you should ensure it is placed in the middle of the room – away from any walls or furniture.

The recommended distance is at least 20cm away, as this enables the air to circulate around the room evenly.

It’s also important not to use the dehumidifier near any heat sources (such as fireplaces or radiators) or vents, as this will impact its performance.

Keep windows and doors closed

Make sure all windows and external doors are closed while you are using your dehumidifier.

The device won’t be able to perform as well if it is trying to tackle the humidity of the air outside.

Keep the filter clean

Ensure you are regularly checking your dehumidifier’s filter, manufacturers recommend cleaning it every two weeks or at least once a month.

Simply remove the filter and give it a gentle vacuum with your hoover’s brush attachment.

If the filter is severely clogged, you may need to give it a quick wash.

Avoid allowing dirt and dust to build up and clog the filter, as this will stop your dehumidifier from working properly.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure you are caring for your dehumidifier properly.

Keep dripping, wet clothes away from the dehumidifier

This is extremely important, as it dripping clothes can pose a serious fire hazard.

If you are using the dehumidifier to help dry wet clothes, make sure they can’t drip over your machine.

Place your machine a safe distance from the wet clothing, and point it so the airflow faces towards your laundry.

This will prevent any damage to your device, and could also prevent a fire in your home.

Avoid switching off at the mains

If you have a desiccant dehumidifier, make sure you are not hurriedly turning it off at the mains after use.

You should use the machine’s control panel to turn it off, and ensure it can close down properly.

This enables the internal fan to continue spinning until cool, which will protect the internal machinery from damage.
