Family mourns NYC mom killed in hit-and-run on Christmas
JAMAICA, Queens (PIX11) -- A family is mourning the death of a mother who was killed in a hit-and-run outside her home in New York City on Christmas.
The woman has been identified as 45-year-old Antonina Freycinet.
"I heard a loud bang and I went out and I saw her," said Andrew Dasrath, her son.
Dasrath said his mother had gone outside to get some groceries when she was hit right outside their house in Jamaica, Queens around 9:30 p.m. He rushed outside to find the mother of three in the street.
“I'm devastated and sad. It’s really unexpected that this happened," Dasrath said.
Police said an unidentified vehicle going westbound on 111th Avenue hit Freycinet, who was crossing the street outside of the marked crosswalk at the corner of 158th Street.
The vehicle sped off, and Freycinet was then hit by a Ford Expedition. The driver of the Ford Expedition, a 64-year-old man, stayed on the scene.
Surveillance video from less than a block away captured a vehicle moments after the crash going westbound on 111th Avenue, running a stop sign. It’s unclear if the vehicle is connected to the hit-and-run.
"It’s just something you can’t describe. It’ll stick with you a long time," said Josh Borra, a neighbor.
The Borra family lives nearby. They were just finishing Christmas dinner when they heard someone had been hit.
Josh Borra ran out to help.
"They were telling her 'don't move, don't move.' Her family came out too," Josh Borra said.
His mother, Marlyn Borra, said, "It's just so sad. Celebrating Christmas and somebody died on the road like that. It's really so horrible."
Neighbors hope the person responsible is caught. Freycinet’s son does too.
"She was caring, loving, very easygoing. She was just a good person," Dasrath said. "It's just crazy that it happened on Christmas Day ... And not even stop and see if she's OK."
