MLB Rumors: AL West Club Interested In Former Red Sox Reliever

Former Boston Red Sox reliever Chris Martin might make the 2025 season his last and could finish his career close to home.

Martin confirmed this year that he likely will play one more season before calling it quits after nearly a decade in MLB. It’s speculated that the 38-year-old wants to play for a team near his native Texas.

That would be perfect for the Rangers since they have an interest in the Arlington, Texas native, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

Martin will play in his age-39 season next year, but the right-hander was among the best relievers in the league in his two-year Boston career. Martin posted a 2.16 ERA in 95 2/3 innings with 96 strikeouts in two seasons. His metrics were above average, and he finished top 12 in Cy Young voting in 2023.

A return to his home state would mark a second run with the Rangers for Martin. Texas suffered a World Series hangover in 2024, and a veteran like Martin could help Bruce Bochy’s side get back on track.

The Red Sox weren’t opposed to retaining the reliever. However, the additions of Aroldis Chapman, Justin Wilson and Jovani Morán signaled Boston might be leaning in a different direction for its bullpen.
