Former Ambassador highlights declining US-Pakistan ties post-Afghanistan withdrawal

0

The former Pakistani ambassador to the United States stated that Pakistan’s importance to America has decreased following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Maleeha Lodhi highlighted that America’s strategic priorities have shifted.

In an interview with ARY News, Maleeha Lodhi explained that Pakistan’s significance for the United States has been closely tied to Afghanistan. This relationship saw substantial changes post-Afghanistan withdrawal.

Recently, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Pakistan’s missile program, describing it as a threat to its national security. Lodhi noted that the production of long-range ballistic missiles by Pakistan lacks justification in the current geopolitical context.

While the U.S. had troops in Afghanistan, relations with Pakistan were strong. During this period, Pakistan received over $20 billion in aid from the U.S. over two decades, reflecting the strategic partnership at the time.

Lodhi observed that America’s interests and priorities have now diverged significantly from the past. This shift has contributed to the waning importance of Pakistan in U.S. foreign policy.

Regarding Pakistan’s internal politics, Lodhi pointed out that concerns about the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party should have been addressed before Donald Trump came to power. Delayed action, she suggested, has exacerbated political challenges.

Lodhi urged Pakistan to exercise caution in responding to external pressures and to prioritize addressing domestic issues. She stressed that internal stability should be the country’s main focus.

Pakistan’s military has prosecuted supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in military courts. These individuals are accused of attacking military installations, raising concerns about the rule of law.

The evolving geopolitical landscape has reshaped the dynamics between the U.S. and Pakistan. While the historical partnership during the Afghanistan war was significant, shifting priorities on both sides suggest a need for Pakistan to recalibrate its foreign policy.

To ensure sustainable progress, Pakistan must navigate external pressures judiciously while strengthening its internal governance. By focusing on domestic reform and fostering constructive international relations, the country can address current challenges and seize future opportunities.
