Kathryn Hahn reveals the unusual way she learned about her Golden Globe nom for ‘Agatha All Along’
Many stars set their alarms for nomination day. Not Kathryn Hahn.
The actress was caught unawares when she found out about her Golden Globe nomination for Agatha All Along.
“I had no idea that they were being announced,” Hahn tells Gold Derby. “I just was blissfully not looking up times. I woke up to a bunch of texts, but I had a gyno appointment, and it wasn’t until I was in the car on the way that it started to all click into place.” She continues on, “I was running so late to this gyno but I had to pull over because I was flipping out. I really was taken aback and just so emotional that it was for this particular part in this particular show. I’m taking the win of just that.”
Agatha All Along is Disney+’s highly anticipated spin-off of WandaVision (2021), with Hahn returning in her role of a centuries-old, sassy witch. Jac Schaeffer created the show, which also stars Joe Locke as Teen (no spoilers here!), Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal, Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer “Jen” Kale, Ali Ahn as Alice Wu-Gulliver, Debra Jo Rupp as Sharon Davis, and Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu.
Hahn readily admits she’s “never really won anything” in terms of awards, outside of a second-place ribbon for her crayon drawing of a crossing guard at her childhood mall in Cleveland Heights. However, she tries “to just find the gratitude of being in those kind of rooms.” As she explains, “Most of my life as an actor was watching these amazing shows at home and getting in pajamas with some candy, and maybe a little stoned, since it was back in the day. But then to be here now, it’s like, pinch me. I love my job so much and I can’t believe I get to do it for a living.”
The Golden Globes ceremony on Jan. 5 is fast approaching, so Hahn doesn’t have much time to prepare. “I’m literally getting back from Machu Picchu, then basically scrubbing my fingernails and getting ready,” she reveals. In terms of who she’s most looking forward to seeing that evening, she singles out Disclaimer star Cate Blanchett, plus “all of the women in my category. I can’t wait to see all of them and just get a lot of photographs and squeeze so many people.”
Does the song “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” (written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) get stuck in Hahn’s head like it does for viewers all around the world? “Yes!” exclaims the self-proclaimed karaoke enthusiast. “We would be on set and Aubrey would just be humming it. It was so baked into the DNA of this show from the beginning. We all started working on the song before we even started shooting, so it was just this undercurrent throughout the whole show. And then to hear the way that the Lopezes reincarnated it for different purposes, like the Tom Waits-y version, it was pretty amazing. But yeah, none of us could get it out of our heads.”
Working with LuPone was a “bucket list” moment for the actress. “She’s the most hilarious, earthy, grounded, fantastic woman,” Hahn raves. “She’s kind of like the mother of all of us in that group. And that was a really fabulous group. We got along. I’m so in love with every single person in that cast. We spent a lot of time together and thank God it was such a sweet, talented group of humans. I just felt like every day I came to play with these people that were also there to play.”
Agatha All Along is the most queer-friendly Marvel project to date, but that wasn’t necessarily by design. “What I love about it, and what I think is the genius of Jac Schaeffer, is that it’s just what the show is,” Hahn declares. “That’s baked into the show, so it doesn’t feel at all like it’s just slapped on top of something else. And I am really grateful to Marvel for not getting in its own way — they were really excited and supportive and thrilled. I see it as this really good show that happens to include a multitude of things, and one of which, not the least of which at all, is that it’s very queer. And also, women over 40! There’s so many things about it that just feel very new and fresh in this genre.”
The scenes in which all of the witches had puffy, swollen faces went viral online — watch below. And even though Hahn thought the prosthetics were “fabulous,” she jokes, “Sometimes I felt like my real face and that face looked so similar. It was very hard to look back and forth [in the mirror].”
When Agatha All Along submitted in the comedy/musical categories at the Golden Globes, as opposed to the limited series categories, fans wondered if a second season might be on the horizon. Hahn doesn’t know what the future holds, though she confesses, “Of course I would come back in any capacity as Agatha. She’s the nearest and dearest to me. I was surprised when I read that it was submitted in comedy. It certainly kind of pricked all of our ears up. But Marvel doesn’t say anything, so we kind of have to just surrender.”
But back to that second-place ribbon she won when she was a kid. “I was so happy to get second,” Hahn recalls with a chuckle. “I don’t even know what the first place was. My mom hung up my second-place ribbon for so long. And you know what? That kept me humble, from the beginning.”
