Rosenthal: Entire Industry Believes Mets Will Re-Sign Alonso

0

Updated Post: Dec. 23 at 2:04 pm

While appearing on his podcast, “Fair Territory” Ken Rosenthal noted, “the entire baseball industry believes the Mets will re-sign first baseman Pete Alonso.”

He brought this up while discussing the market for third baseman Alex Bregman and how it might tie directly to Nolan Arenado‘s market. Rosenthal says that if a team can pay price X for Arenado via a trade, a team might not want to pay price Y for Bregman. He highlights the Tigers, Red Sox, Yankees and Mets as teams inquiring about third basemen.

Rosenthal brings up an interesting point in Alonso and Bregman’s market. Rather than the Mets signing both — would the Mets rather sign Bregman, a more athletic choice compared to Alonso, a first baseman whom the team might have concerns over aging? This would shift Mark Vientos to first, and Bregman would play third.

Rosenthal hypothesizes the Mets are asking agent Scott Boras, who represents Alonso and Bregman, these questions and more but believes Alonso will remain a Met at the end of the day.

The Mets continue to show interest in Alex Bregman, and are a legitimate potential landing spot for the infielder, according to Metsmerized’s own Mike Mayer.

The Mets have been linked to Bregman throughout the offseason, and an update from Mayer solidifies the seriousness of their interest.

Bregman had another strong season for Houston in 2024, slashing .260/.315/.453 with 26 homers. The third baseman is also a plus defender, registering six outs above average and winning his first gold glove last season.

If signed, Bregman would slot over to third base, leaving first in question. Mark Vientos is an in-house candidate and has played the position at the major league level.

A Pete Alonso reunion is also another solution at first base, but the want for a long contract still leaves a return in question.
