Bashar al-Assad’s wife Asma has filed for divorce just weeks after he was removed from power.

According to The Jerusalem PostAsma has filed for divorce from the toppled Syrian dictator after growing dissastisfied with life in Moscow.

She is now seeking to return to London, the city in which she grew up.

Russian authorities are reportedly examining her request and will need to grant her special permission to leave the country.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Asma was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of blood cancer for which she had been undergoing treatment.

She had previously been diganosed with breast cancer from which she made a full recovery.

Despite being granted asylum by the Kremlin, the couple are currently placed under severe restrictrions. They are not allowed to leave Moscow or engage in any political activities.

A British citizen born to Syrian parents, Asma moved to Syria in 2000 and married the young Assad at the age of 25. She had served as Syria’s First Lady until the recently regime’s collapse.

Her status as the British-born wife of one of the most notorious dictators on earth has long fascinated political analysts who have speculated about her feelings surrounding her husband’s brutal regime.

Earlier this weekend, her husband released his first statement since the collapse of his regime, in which he insisted that he had never intended to flee Syria.

“My departure from Syria was neither planned nor did it occur during the final hours of the battles, as some have claimed,” the statement read. “On the contrary, I remained in Damascus, carrying out my duties until the early hours of Sunday 8th December 2024.”

“With no viable means of leaving the base, Moscow requested that the base’s command arrange an immediate evacuation to Russia on the evening of Sunday 8th December.”

“This took place a day after the fall of Damascus, following the collapse of the final military positions and the resulting paralysis of all remaining state institutions,” the statement continued.

“At no point during these events did I consider stepping down or seeking refuge, nor was such a proposal made by any individual or party. The only course of action was to continue fighting against the terrorist onslaught.”
