Dominic Solanke has started strongly at Spurs

Dominic Solanke has made a decent start to his Tottenham career, having found the back of the net nine times so far this season while also delivering four assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

However, what has stood out about the 26-year-old more than his goal contributions is the work he does off the ball, with the Englishman being a tireless presser and helping the Lilywhites win possession back in the final third time and again.

Tottenham’s record signing has now garnered praise for another aspect of his game, which one former West Ham man has been mightily impressed by.

Carlton Cole reveals what he likes about Dominic Solanke

Referring to the Tottenham man’s goal in the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea a week and a half ago, Cole admitted that he loved the former Cherries star’s movement before getting on the end of the cross.

The 41-year-old compared Solanke’s movement in the final third to that of his former Chelsea teammate Hernan Crespo.

Cole said on The Joy of Football Podcast: “I loved Dom Solanke’s movement the other night. So I’ll tell you why. Because it reminded me of what I saw. And this is a game I watched from the stands. I was in the squad, Hernan Crespo, against West Ham at Upton Park. I think it was a 2004 or 2005 season.

“He’d gone in front of him, showed himself, then went behind him, then went in front of him like that again. Then the defender moved, then he went behind him, ball come in, goal. For me, that is. Those type of goals there, that is just beautiful for me when I’m looking at football. When I saw Dom Solanke half done what he’d done, I was like, that’s beautiful.”

Solanke is an elite penalty-box poacher

While Solanke might not be as good a ball-striker as the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, he has fantastic instincts inside the box.

Most of his goals for Bournemouth last season came in and around the six-yard box and the same has been true at Tottenham so far. That is partly down to the England international’s movement.

Given the number of crosses that Spurs play into the box every game, the striker could quite easily finish with more than 20 goals this season.
