Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool: Title momentum at stake

0

Sunday’s Premier League action concludes with a mouth-watering showdown between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in North London.

Arne Slot’s side defied numerical disadvantage to draw 2-2 with Fulham at Anfield last weekend.

Elsewhere, Chelsea seized the opportunity to close the gap to only two points, intensifying the pressure on the Reds to return to the win column.

With the game in hand, the Merseyside giants are still in pole position to win only their second league title in the Premier League era.

However, a highly unpredictable Tottenham squad could throw a spanner in the works, though Slot’s charge head into the match as warm favourites.

The Dutch manager confirmed during his pre-match conference that Liverpool will take the field without Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate.

Giant slayers

Spurs have developed a notorious habit of dropping points against lesser opposition.

But they’ve often fared well in high-profile match-ups, especially under Ange Postecoglou.

A goal-glutted 4-3 win against Manchester United in midweek League Cup action bolstered Tottenham’s spirits.

It was their second consecutive win in all competitions following a 5-0 rout of Premier League basement boys Southampton.

Postecoglou’s men have already defeated Man Utd twice this season, not to mention they humbled Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium in November.

As such, Liverpool cannot afford to underestimate their mid-table hosts.

Happy hunting ground

The Reds slumped to a 2-1 defeat in this corresponding fixture last season, which is another reason why they can’t take Spurs lightly.

However, they had gone unbeaten on five consecutive league visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beforehand (W4, D1).

It’s also worth noting that the abovementioned loss in September 2023 remains one of Liverpool’s two reverses across their last 23 top-flight encounters against the London outfit (W15, D6).

Another triumph is a distinct possibility for the visiting side, considering they’ve emerged victorious from 20 out of 23 matches as pre-match favourites (D2, L1).
