Bruins Cut Ties With Stanley Cup Champion After Waiver Claim

The Bruins are shaking things up.

Boston placed forward Tyler Johnson on unconditional waivers on Thursday, general manager Don Sweeney announced in a press release.

Johnson, 34, signed a one-year contract on Nov. 4, appearing in just nine total games during his tenure with the club. The B’s only received two assists from the two-time Stanley Cup champion, who will be free to sign with any team on Friday.

The Bruins announced Saturday they claimed Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers from the New York Islanders, which set things in motion as it relates to Johnson. Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco hasn’t used the 24-year-old just yet but will add him to the lineup Thursday against the Edmonton Oilers.

“Wahlstrom will be in and (Cole) Koepke will be out,” Sacco said, per team-provided video. “…Wahlstrom will go up with (Trent) Frederic and (Charlie) Coyle, and (Mark) Kastelic will go back down with (John) Beecher and (Marc) McLaughlin.”

The B’s and Oilers will take the ice at 9 p.m. ET, following an hour of pregame coverage on NESN.
