$550,000 funding request granted to Stormont Vail Events Center

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Shawnee County officials have agreed to give a Topeka events center some financial help following a poor financial showing in 2024.

Shawnee County Commissioners agreed to give the Oak View Group, which operates the Stormont Vail Events Center in Topeka, $277,403.57 from its contingency funds. This makes up the remaining amount of money the Oak View Group originally asked for in November. The final vote on this decision was 2-1 with Kevin Cook being the sole 'no' vote on the issue.

Commissioners previously granted the Oak View Group's request for $275,000 on Nov. 14. Combined with the additional cash given the green light on Dec. 19, this comes out to more than $550,000 given to the events center out of the county's contingency funds.

The Oak View Group told commissioners in November it has suffered from a bad financial year over the course of 2024 due to poor turnout and the loss of the Topeka Tropics indoor football team. 27 News previously reported the county's contingency fund as containing $629,000.
