‘Superman’ trailer: Look up at David Corenswet, James Gunn’s new man of steel [Watch]
Look, up in the sky! It’s time to watch the trailer for James Gunn’s Superman.
On Thursday, after a steady drumbeat of promotion this week, Warner Bros. and the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker released the official trailer for the Superman reboot. The new film is written and directed by Gunn – who is also the co-chair of DC Studios at Warner Bros. – and stars David Corenswet (The Politician, Hollywood, and Twisters) as the titular man of steel. Other cast members include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Wendall Pierce as Perry White, and Skylar Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.
Superman is out in theaters on July 11, 2025.
Gunn has spoken frequently about the production of the film, sharing things with fans on social media and with select journalists during a set visit last year. Those reports were published this week and included some interesting context about the film. For instance, Gunn said this Superman isn’t so much an origin story as a deeper exploration of the character. “We just start in the middle of the action,” Gunn said to the press. “Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hates Superman’s guts from the beginning, although they don’t know each other personally. So we start right in the middle of the action.”
During his time at Marvel, where he directed all three films in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn became known for his subversive humor and bold music choices. That continued when Gunn directed The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC. But Superman is different and Gunn said the tone of the film is more in sync with the perception of the character.
“I start with a place that’s very hopeful, fun… but incredibly grounded [and] incredibly serious all at the same time,” he said to the press last year. “It’s humorous, but it certainly is not as [comedic] as either Suicide Squad or Guardians. There’s plenty of humor in it. People like Rachel are so funny and David is very [funny as well], so there’s humor in it, but it’s trying to create something that is grounded, but also it’s an incredibly fanciful world. It’s fantasy, it’s taking from other things like Game of Thrones where it’s this universe where superheroes actually exist. What are they like? There’s a magic there that’s undeniable.”
