Firefighters rescued one person while another — a 9-year-old boy — was taken to a hospital in good condition following an Auburn Gresham apartment fire Wednesday morning on the South Side.

Around 7:25 a.m., firefighters responded to the 7900 block of South Racine Avenue for the fire, which started on the third floor of the apartment building, Chicago Fire Department officials said.

At least six ambulances were sent to the building and a 9-year-old boy was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for smoke inhalation where he was in good condition, Chicago police said. He has since been released, police said.

Additionally, one adult who was trapped was rescued from a window of the building, fire officials said. The adult was not injured and firefighters searched the building and found no other victims.

"A ladder was put up to the person who was at the window and the person [was] brought down," Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford said. "Damages were mainly limited to the top floor and [the fire] was quickly extinguished."

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
