YOU might be hoping this year Santa will shimmy his way down the chimney with a luxury parcel for you.

But if you are lucky enough to receive a gift from a high-end designer, don’t be so quick to tear the wrapping to shreds

Have you ever considered that your luxury packaging could bring you in some cash?

TikTok user @charlottedeville_ has shared a handy tip for making cash from empty luxury boxes and carrier bags.

So you might want to hook some of them back out of the recycling.

The money-savvy TikTokker captioned her video: “Promise me you will NEVER throw away your LUXURY PACKAGING ever again…”

Charlotte had plenty of empty designer boxes and bags laying around.

Speaking to the camera, Charlotte holds up some empty carrier bags from Christian Dior: “These empty bags and boxes are actually the most valuable thing you receive when you make a luxury purchase.

“Let me tell you why.

“You buy a Chanel perfume, Gucci earrings.

“This packaging costs you nothing, but it’s worth something.”

Charlotte goes on to show a plain white bag with the Dior logo printed across it in gold lettering and says: “I’ve just sold one of these very average Dior gift bags on Vinted for £8.

“A 2021 Report by Money found that the average resale price for a Louis Vuitton box was £74.”

Charlotte warned viewers to stay out of trouble while reselling the packaging: “The one caution I would hazard is do not present yourself as a representative of a brand.

“Some people are buying this packaging in order to sell fake goods in authentic packaging.

“Steer clear of that and just sell your unwanted packaging to people who are using it for decor or to add to a collection.

“Some people buy this stuff because they love the idea of owning a box that their favourite influencer has held or posted on their Instagram grid.

“Verified resellers of luxury goods buy this packaging because it’s obviously so much nicer to give it to the buyer in authentic packages.

“Steer clear of the shady stuff. Just sell your unwanted packaging to people with honest and good intentions – you’re onto a winner, 100% profit.”

Viewers in the comments were impressed with the idea, with one writing: “No way, my hoarding has come in handy.”

Another person said: “I’ve got like 20 Dior boxes I was going to chuck away.”

While another user wrote: “I need to stop throwing mine out.”

Which designer brand’s packaging is selling for more on Vinted?

  1. Gucci box – £21
  2. Chanel box – £15
  3. Burberry box – £15
  4. Louis Vuitton box – £15
  5. Prada box – £12
  6. Dior box – £10

Top tips for selling on eBay

NEW to eBay? It's head of secondhand, Emma Grant, reveals how to optimise your listings:

  1. Use key words – eBay automatically filters listing titles for key words, so it’s crucial to use the terminology people search for – especially brand and product names.
  2. Choose the right category for your product – It might sound obvious but it’s important to always choose the most specific category to sell in.
  3. Pictures are important – Most users will not bid on items they cannot see. For best results, take photos in natural light against a neutral background and be honest about any scratches or damage to the item.
  4. Be as detailed as possible – Be honest about the condition of the product and be sure to note any wear and tear.
  5. Look at past sold items–  eBay has a function that allows you to search for the item you want to sell and then filter the results by sold items. Here, you can view the price the item has sold for and get insight into how others have listed it.
  6. Selling Sundays – Get the timing right. The busiest time for buyers is Sunday evenings, so schedule your listings to end around that time. Opt for seven-day auctions to ensure the max number of bids. The longer your item is listed, the more chance of people seeing it, so unless it’s time-sensitive, pick seven days.  December is the busiest month on eBay.
  7. Be realistic with pricing – Try searching for similar items on eBay, to make sure you’re going for the right price and always ask yourself “would I pay this price for this item?”
  8. Donate to charity – When listing your item, consider donating a percentage of the sale to a cause of your choice – from 10% to 100% – you can donate the funds raised from your item straight from the platform.
