How can Pat Cummins create another follow-up situation on Day 5 of Gabba Test: Rule that the Australian captain might use
The last-wicket partnership by Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep helped India avoid a follow-on situation in the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja worked without a break and saved India from the score of 51/4 which was at the beginning of the day.
Even though they avoided a follow-on, Indian team is currently trailing Australia by 293 runs, as they received massive applause from the folks sitting in the dressing room.
How can Pat Cummins create a follow-on situation?
According to a rule that allows the captain of a team to withdraw/forfeit their innings whenever they feel like it, Pat Cummins can create a situation that is just like a follow-on on Day 5. However, it can turn out to be a really risky step as it might not only cause them to win, but this also makes way for India to win the match.
Law 15.2 of the MCC Rule Book deals with the forfeiture of an inning and states, “A captain may forfeit either of his/her side’s innings at any time before the commencement of that innings. A forfeited innings shall be considered to be a completed innings.”
Australia will lead by 194 if they had dismissed either Akash Deep or Jasprit Bumrah on the opening ball of Day 5. India will then have to bat again with a bare target of 194 in case if Pat Cummins decides to forfiet the innings.
There are chances for India to win the match in such case if they can manage to chase 194. his move however holds a big risk, and that comes out to be very unlikely for Pat to go ahead and take this step.
