Occultation of Saturn by the Moon

0

Photographer: Roberta Calabrese Summary Author: Roberta Calabrese

Shown above is the occultation of the planet Saturn by the nearly full Moon as observed from Pozzallo, Sicily (Italy) during the early morning hours of August 21, 2024. The bright Moon passed in front of the ringed planet at approximately 4:30 local time, hiding it from view for nearly 50-minutes. Note that because from our perspective Saturn's rings are more or less edgewise to us now, they're rather unremarkable when observed through a small telescope.

Photo Details: Nikon Z 611 camera; Tamron 150-600 G2 lens; f 10; 1/50 second exposure; ISO 250.
