BIG blow as THIS star player is set to miss rest of Border Gavaskar Trophy

Australia have been dealt a massive blow on Tuesday as pacer Josh Hazlewood sustained calf soreness and underwent scans to assess the severity of the injury. Later it the day it was revealed by Cricket Australia that Hazlewood has been ruled out of remaining Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Tests between India and Australia.

After the rain-hit third Test at the Gabba, India and Australia have two Tests remaining at Melbourne (from December 26) and in Sydney (from January 2). Hazlewood is second injury casualty for Australians with all-rounder Cameron Green already sidelined from the series.

“Josh Hazlewood has sustained a right sided calf strain which will prevent him from playing any further part in the Test match against India in Brisbane,” Cricket Australia have written in their official statement on Tuesday. “He is likely to miss the remainder of the Test series.”

The 33-year-old managed just one over before leaving the field early on day four of the third Test against India at the Gabba. “Josh Hazlewood reported calf awareness in this morning’s warm-up,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson had earlier said.

“He will be taken for scans to assess the injury.”

Hazlewood, who had made his return to the side after missing the Pink Ball Test due to a side strain, was seen discussing the matter with captain Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, and physio Nick Jones before heading off the field at the Gabba.

Hazlewood had replaced fellow pacer Scot Boland, who played in the day-night Adelaide Test, in the Australia eleven for this Test. If Hazlewood is unable to return to the field, Australia could be left a bowler short, potentially impacting their chances of dismissing India and securing an outright victory in the ongoing Test.

“That’s a real blow for Hazlewood, who missed out on the Adelaide match. It is a right calf injury and a replacement will be made in due course. It’s frustration for Hazlewood, but Boland will be in at the MCG,” former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket.
