Arsenal legend Ian Wright admits he feels sorry for one Tottenham man

Ian Wright has explained why he feels sorry for Ange Postecoglou as the Tottenham head coach’s position continues to come under scrutiny.

The media have understandably turned up the pressure on Postecoglou, with many now suggesting that his position could soon become untenable.

Some pundits have opined that the Australian will not be in his job a lot longer if he fails to adapt his tactics to the opposition and specific game states.

However, if there is one thing we know about Postecoglou by now, it is that he is not one to compromise on his philosophy, with the 59-year-old having a deep-seated belief in his principles.

Ian Wright feels sorry for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham

Wright remarked that the injuries that Tottenham are dealing with make it especially difficult for Postecoglou, given the way he wants to play.

However, the former Arsenal man admitted that the mentality of the Spurs squad also has to be questioned in light of their inconsistency.

He said on his own podcast, Wrighty’s House: “And you kind of feel like that is the mentality of Tottenham at the moment, especially when you’re seeing as well, you know, the injuries have to, you have to say something for the injuries with Ange.

“You have to feel for him and the way he’s playing, the way he wants to play, and the injuries that are affecting his team are definitely causing a massive problem.

“But again, you have to say mentality. You can’t beat City or like that, beating teams and playing like that away from home. And then you come home and then people saying about losing to Ipswich, it’s not even a case of losing to Ipswich.

“It’s the mistakes that they made to lose the game against Chelsea as well, what you have to look at, the mentality of the players.”

The manager is usually the fall guy

Irrespective of whether Tottenham’s current predicament is Postecoglou‘s fault or not, he will be aware that he will be the fall guy if the results do not turn around quickly.

It is much easier for clubs to change the coaching staff than it is to make big changes to the squad.

Rightly or wrongly, it will be Postecoglou and his staff who will be on the firing line and the 59-year-old’s position will become untenable if Spurs continue to struggle.
