Failing Macron Tries Again, Appoints Veteran Centrist François Bayrou as New French Prime Minister After Last Cabinet Lasted Less Than Four Months

French President Emmanuel Macron is a survival expert, a political escape-artist that has survived countless crises since coming into power in 2017.

In his time as President, Macron has had no less than 6 Prime Ministers: Édouard Philippe served for 3 years, 49 days; Jean Castex for 1 year, 317 days.

By the time Élisabeth Borne came to the end of her 1 year, 238 days, Macron was already very unpopular, governing with minority coalitions, so he appointed a young and vibrant gay leftist, Gabriel Attal – who was only able to remain a PM for 240 days.

In his last bet, after Macron had rigged the election against the right and betrayed the left, he chose conservative Michel Barnier who only lasted 99 days until booted out in a historic vote of no-confidence.

So, now, ‘Le Petit Roi’ is trying once again, now appointing an experienced centrist politician, long-time ally François Bayrou.

The Guardian reported:

“Taking office, Bayrou said he recognized the serious problem of public debt in France and the need for parliament to agree a budget. He said the task was so mountainous it was like politically climbing the Himalayas. He said he wanted to break down the ‘glass wall’ between politicians and voters who had lost trust. There was a need to reconcile France and fight discrimination, he said during a handover ceremony with his predecessor.”

A ‘man of the countryside’, Bayrou is a renowned leader from south-western France, a former education minister and mayor of Pau, a close confidante to Emmanuel Macron since he swept to power in 2017.

“Bayrou is the fourth French prime minister this year as France has struggled with a growing political crisis in a divided parliament. Barnier’s government was ousted last week after only three months in office, and Macron wants to avoid a new government facing the same fate.”

The snap election in June brought about a divided French parliament.

The far-left had the largest number of votes but far short of a majority. Macron’s centrist grouping is much weakened, and the rightwing National Rally gained seats but was kept away from power by ‘fire-wall’ tactics by Macron and the left.

“Those divisions remain and the first task of the new prime minister is to appoint a government that can work with parliament to pass a full budget for 2025.

[…] Jordan Bardella, the president of Marine Le Pen’s far-right, anti-immigration National Rally party, said his party would not immediately back a no-confidence vote in the new government. But he said: ‘This new prime minister must understand that he has no majority in parliament’. Bardella said his party still had ‘red lines’ on the budget and the new prime minister must talk to all political groups. ‘The ball is in François Bayrou’s court’, he said.”
