Postecoglou has resisted the temptation of criticising players publicly in his Tottenham tenure so far and has preferred to take responsibility for the team’s poor displays.

However, that changed following Spurs’ 2-2 draw at Ibrox on Thursday, with the Australian making it clear that Timo Werner‘s display “was not acceptable”, adding that he wants the players to be “giving the best they can.”

Postecoglou doubled down on his comments on Friday, insisting that he is not worried about bruised egos in the dressing room.

A clear message sent to the players

The Telegraph have now revealed that Werner is not alone in facing the wrath of Postecoglou.

The report says that behind the scenes at Hotspur Way, the Spurs head coach and his coaching staff are demanding a lot more from a number of senior players at the club.

Those players have reportedly been told in no uncertain terms that a lot more is expected of them over the next few weeks.

Postecoglou showing he can be a hard taskmaster?

One gets the feeling that Postecoglou is wary of his reputation as being a favourite among the players and how that is perceived by the Tottenham hierarchy.

With players coming out and defending him publicly and having a go at the club’s top brass, the Australian would be concerned that Daniel Levy and co-view him as someone who always takes the players’ side, leaving the squad feeling almost too comfortable.

Postecoglou’s comments may be an effort to fight back against perception and show that he is willing to call out certain players, and Werner comes across as an easy target for the 59-year-old.
