Vitale Conquers Cancer Again

This is such great news

Back in the ‘90’s, or maybe a little later than that, ESPN had a Dick Vitale sound-alike contest. The double-entendre tagline? “We’ve all got a little Dick in us.”

Like everybody else, even ESPN had fun at Vitale’s expense.

And it was understandable. Vitale, an icon of college basketball for decades, has always been easy to poke fun at. He is like a Muppet come to life, full of energy and child-like enthusiasm.

However, it’s always been a positive, fun energy and even as they poked fun at him, people loved him.

And underestimated him, too.

Because all that stuff he says about having heart? About never giving up?

The man lives it, and he’s never lived it more than he has since his struggles with cancer began.

He beat melanoma and lymphoma in 2021. He beat vocal cord cancer in 2023. And now, in 2024, he has beat cancer a third time, overcoming lymph node cancer.

That man has beat cancer four times in his 80’s. It’s one of the most amazing stories in sports lately, frankly, and should be celebrated. His relentless optimism, his humility and selflessness - that’s not the only reason that Vitale is still with us. A lot of credit has to go to his doctors, obviously.

A lot of it though goes to Vitale. The man never gave up and he’s given us all a gift. We couldn’t be happier for him.
