Save the Children has described 2024 as a “merciless” year for children in Afghanistan, citing the severe impacts of the ongoing economic crisis, recurring droughts, and floods on the lives of children in the country.

The humanitarian organization emphasized the urgency of international support to address the worsening conditions faced by children in Afghanistan.

In a video message posted on X on Friday, December 13, Save the Children appealed for international assistance to help Afghan children. The message highlighted the grim reality faced by children and urged the global community to contribute to alleviating their suffering.

The organization pointed out that the ongoing economic downturn, coupled with consecutive droughts and floods, has left children in Afghanistan in a dire situation, particularly when it comes to food security. The instability has severely affected their access to basic needs, with many children facing malnutrition and hunger.

The organization stated that while conflicts in Afghanistan have reduced, children in the country are still living in extremely vulnerable conditions. Despite the decrease in violence, factors like poverty, lack of access to education, and food insecurity continue to put Afghan children at high risk.

Save the Children also highlighted the increasing number of children forced into labor, particularly after the rise of the Taliban. Reports indicate that one-third of children in Afghanistan have been compelled to work to support their families, contributing to their vulnerability and long-term trauma.

The combination of economic hardship and food insecurity has forced many Afghan families to rely on their children for survival. With poverty rates rising, children have become essential contributors to family income, even at the cost of their education and well-being.

The worsening situation in Afghanistan requires urgent international intervention. Save the Children’s call for support is a reminder of the critical need for humanitarian aid, particularly focused on children, who are the most vulnerable in this ongoing crisis. International support is crucial to alleviate the suffering of Afghan children, especially in addressing food insecurity, child labor, and education.

The plight of Afghan children highlights the intersection of economic collapse, environmental disasters, and social instability. While immediate humanitarian assistance is necessary, addressing the root causes of these issues, including economic development, political stability, and access to basic services, is essential for creating long-term solutions.

The international community must not only respond to the immediate needs of Afghan children but also work towards sustainable support to help the nation’s future generations overcome the challenges they face.
