Police identify key factor that led to Topeka teen's death in crash

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A report from the Topeka Police Department (TPD) is shedding light on what led up to a Topeka teen's death during a crash in late November.

Topekan Creighton Lloyd-Collins, 17, was riding his 2005 Honda motorcycle “at a high rate of speed” when he crashed into a Jeep Patriot that pulled out in front of him on Nov. 21, police said. The crash happened at 2:48 p.m. outside Washburn Tech, located at 5724 Southwest Huntoon Street.

Lloyd-Collins attended the technical college and Washburn Rural High School, according to his obituary. Police said he was traveling west on Huntoon toward Wanamaker Road when he attempted to pass two school buses.

The Jeep, driven by a 61-year-old Topeka man, was pulling out of his apartment complex from Glendale Drive onto Huntoon. As the two school buses were turning right onto Glendale, the 61-year-old “decided to proceed from the stop sign, to turn left” onto Huntoon, police said. He turned in front of the passing motorcycle, which hit his Jeep.

Police said Lloyd-Collins, who would’ve turned 18 later this month, applied his motorcycle breaks before crashing into the Jeep. He died at a local hospital three days later, according to his obituary. The 61-year-old was hospitalized after being trapped inside the SUV.
