Tottenham pursue deal for Mason Melia

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are competing with several Premier League clubs for the signature of the Republic of Ireland U-19 striker, Mason Melia.

The young striker was reportedly invited to Hotspur Way and was a guest of the club for the home match against Chelsea.

The cost of the deal would be in the region of €1m, but Melia would be unable to join any Premier League club until he turns 18 next September.

Who is Mason Melia?

Melia is currently contracted to St. Patrick’s Atheltic, where Spurs previously signed goalkeeper Josh Keeley.

The 17-year-old is already into his second season playing in the League of Ireland Premier Division. While there would be a jump to playing in the Premier League, it is invaluable that he has already accrued significant minutes in a senior league at such a young age.

With 10 goals and 3 assists for St. Patrick’s Atheltic, Melia is an exciting prospect worth following. Hopefully, Tottenham can leverage their existing relationship with St. Patrick’s to secure Melia’s signature.

Tottenham cannot dismiss their development work

While there is an understandable focus on what Tottenham need in the short-term for the first-team, their continued work in identifying young players is also essential.

When looking at the Europa League squad requirements, Tottenham’s ability to develop club-trained players for the first team is invaluable.

It is too early to judge the success of deals for Lucas Bergvall or Archie Gray. However, in three years when they could hypothetically be considered club-trained, if they have continued to develop and contribute further to the first team, then their signatures at a young age would prove to be essential foresight.
