Red Sox Rumors: Front Office ‘Tirelessly’ Trying To Swing Trade

The Red Sox seem to have ramped up their interest in Seattle Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo.

Boston has been tied to multiple pitchers left on the free agent and/or trade market, including the likes of Corbin Burnes, Walker Buehler and Dylan Cease. Castillo, however, seems to be where the current focus lies, as one recent report claims Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is working “tirelessly” to acquire him.

“Craig Breslow is tireless, he’s really smart, and if he can clear Castillo’s money, give Seattle help elsewhere and allow them to get (Christian) Walker, maybe he gets Castillo,” one fellow general manager told The Athletic’s Peter Gammons on Friday.

The Red Sox must really want Castillo, huh?

Castillo, 31, is an interesting case, as he’s currently locked into a contract with $72 million on the books over the next three seasons. Boston surely could afford to take that on but was believed to be unwilling to give up the package that Seattle would be looking for.

The Mariners reportedly want to make a move for Christian Walker, however, which might only be in the cards if someone is willing to take on Castillo’s money. The Red Sox have to weigh whether they’re willing to, but better make a decision soon.
