Sports briefs: UCLA lineman Prongos entering transfer portal

Former Marin Catholic High and Branson School standout Niki Prongos, an offensive lineman on the UCLA football team, has entered the transfer portal.

Prongos emerged as one of UCLA’s best and most versatile linemen this season and generated some buzz as a legit NFL prospect.

Prongos played at both tackle spots and also saw some time at guard for the Bruins. After beginning the season as a reserve, Prongos started in eight games — including the final five at left tackle — before an injury against Iowa on Nov. 8 cut his season short.

Girls soccer

Riley Pearson scored the winner in second-half stoppage time as Branson outlasted Urban 4-3 on Thursday.

Branson took the lead three times only to see Urban equalize all three times. Julia Myerberg got the Bulls (6-0-0) off to a dream start, scoring in the second minute on an assist from Catrin Howell. Urban tied the game in the 12th minute.

Giselle Hernandez put Branson ahead 2-1 just before the half, assisted by Whitney Collet. The Blues tied the game early in the second half.

Pearson restored the lead in the 63rd minute following Collet’s second assist of the game. Urban once again tied the game in the 69th minute.

• Sloane Carey scored to help Marin Catholic to a 1-1 road draw against Windsor on Wednesday night. MC’s goal came following a long punt by goalie Finn Seymore. Alina Franchetti flicked the ball on to Carey, who finished to put MC (2-1-2) in front 1-0. Windsor scored the equalizer midway through the second half. Franchetti, Carey, and Kate Batdorf have been playing a ton of minutes as MC played its fourth road game in six days, according to coach Isaiah Schwerin. Seymore came up with a massive save early in the game.

Boys soccer

Drew Holden scored a late winner for Branson in a 2-1 home victory against Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday. Holden produced the game winner in the 78th minute off an assist by Jaya Breene. Bode Dossey opened the scoring for the Bulls (1-2-1) with a free kick in the 30th minute.

• Marin Academy (0-2-1) hit the road for a tough game against Monte Vista, falling 3-0 against the Mustangs on Wednesday night.

Boys basketball

San Marin (1-1) secured a 74-30 victory against Analy in the first round of the Rose City Tournament at Cardinal Newman on Thursday.

• Gio Brovelli scored 23 points in the first half en route to a 30-point effort in San Rafael’s 76-51 victory over AIMS College Prep on Wednesday night in the first round of the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament at Healdsburg. Anthony Tajbakhsh scored 17 points, 13 of which came in the third quarter. Will Healy recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. The Bulldogs move on to the semifinals on Friday night to play Kelseyville.

Girls basketball

Terra Linda lost 58-23 to undefeated Las Lomas in Wednesday’s non-league road game. The Trojans (2-4) are scheduled to host Santa Rosa on Friday.

• Marin Academy (4-3) fell 46-34 at home against Fortuna on Wednesday night.

Wrestling

San Marin came up on the short end against host Concord on Wednesday, but celebrated a historic first.

The Mustangs competed in a sanctioned girls dual meet for the first time ever in school history. The eight-woman San Marin team lost 59-24 to Concord, although Derilem Rodas (155) and Gigi Robarge (235) both won by pinfall. Brooke Bested (135) and Jada Bruce-Badberg (140) both won by forfeit.

The San Marin boys lost 50-25, despite strong performances at their upper weights with AJ Conkey (190) and David Coronado (285) each earning pins, and Blake Russo (215) earning a gutsy decision over Concord’s Jeramiah Smith 9-4.

San Marin is set to host the annual Green & Gold Tournament on Saturday, with MCAL rivals Novato, Terra Linda, Archie Williams, Redwood and Tam joining the field that also includes powerhouses Ukiah, Windsor, Northgate, Rodriguez and Las Plumas.
