This Limited-Edition Asics Collaboration Lights Up the Night With Glow-in-the-Dark Details
Tokyo-based retailer Atmos and Asics have kept busy together in 2024, releasing collaborations on a variety of silhouettes including the on-trend Gel-Kayano 14, the retro-informed Gel-NYC and the soon-to-launch GT-2160. After launching exclusively overseas, the store’s “Yakoutake” Gel-Kayano 14 is getting a wider release this weekend.
Set for a Saturday, Dec. 14 launch, the Atmos x Asics Gel-Kayano 14 “Yakoutake” takes its inspiration from a glowing mushroom. In daylight, the shoe has a subtle “Cream/Whisper Green” color scheme that resembles other popular neutral-toned styles of the sneaker.
But when the lights go out, the “Yakoutake” Gel-Kayano 14 comes alive with a vibrant glow-in-the-dark treatment that covers a large portion of the upper as well as the midsole and outsole. According to Atmos, the collaboration’s earthy colors are inspired by the soil in which mushrooms grow, while the phosphorescent details are of course intended to reference the mushroom itself. On the inside of the shoe, the insole has been given a sublimated print of a glowing mushroom pattern.
Atmos and Asics first worked on the Gel-Kayano 14 in November 2023 with two colorways in partnership with South Korean streetwear brand Undermycar. Atmos then teamed with Asics on a gray and purple version of the sneaker in January 2024 before releasing the “Yakoutake” in November. And before the year is finished, the two entities will come together once again on a reflective GT-2160 “Tapetum” collaboration set to launch Dec. 20.
Other recent Asics Gel-Kayano 14 releases of note include two styles made in honor of late Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna. And in November, the brand worked with Boston-based retailer Concepts on a collaboration inspired by vacationing.
Readers looking to pick up the Atmos x Asics Gel-Kayano 14 “Yakoutake” can do so on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET from asics.com for a retail price of $200.
