Affordable housing apartment complex coming soon in north Topeka

0

TOPEKA (KSNT) - A new north Topeka apartment complex is taking shape and is expected to welcome in its first tenants by the spring of 2025.

27 News reached out to the Topeka Community Foundation and Reden Construction regarding progress on the new apartment building at the corner of Kansas Avenue and Highway 24. Work started on the structure on April 26, 2024 which will contain multiple units at 216 square feet apiece. These will cost between $550-$600 per month, including utilities.

Marsha Pope, president of the Topeka Community Foundation, said the new complex is expected to be used as transitional housing for people coming from Valeo and the Topeka Rescue Mission. A total of 24 units will be available to people interested in staying at the apartment building.

"These are efficiency-sized apartments that will be available to people in our community who need an affordable, safe place to live," Pope said.

Reden Jalosjos with Reden Construction said his team is looking to have the entire building finished in March of 2025. He said his workers, as with many big projects, have experienced issues and setbacks but he is hopeful the structure will be finished soon for local tenants.

"First, I am very grateful to God that I have a job," Reden said. "Managing this new construction while taking care of the existing apartments is surely a challenge but I truly believe that what we are doing is for the greater good of those who are seeking a peaceful and quiet place to live."

Pope said her organization is excited to partner with Reden Construction and Alliance Bank, which provided a substantial loan to the project, to get the new apartment ready. She hopes the project will help more people and families find a place to shelter at an affordable place in the Capital City.

"Will this solve the affordable housing needs in our community? No, it won't," Pope said. "But it will provide affordable housing for 24."

Reden encourages people who are "peaceful and quiet" to look for the apartment once it is completed. The apartment complex can be found at 117 Northeast Highway 24.

Pope said the Topeka Community Foundation is looking at some other new projects to help out locals such as the construction of a new childcare center, workforce housing and more affordable housing. You can learn more about the Topeka Community Foundation by clicking here.

"If someone has a business that does create social good in our community, I would welcome the opportunity to have a conversation with them about how the community foundation might assist them," Pope said.
