Jude Law stars in true crime thriller about white supremacist group with PNW ties
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Jude Law is starring in a new film based on a white supremacist organization with ties to the Pacific Northwest.
In true crime thriller “The Order,” named after the real-life terrorist group from the late ‘80s, Law portrays an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation who is leading the hunt for organization founder Robert Mathews. “The Menu” actor Nicholas Hoult portrays Mathews.
According to the FBI’s Seattle division, The Order was formed in 1983 and began conducting armed robberies to gather funds for its “plans and propaganda efforts.” Federal officials reported that the group murdered Jewish radio talk show host Allen Berg the following year, a plan that investigators estimate was set in motion by Mathews.
Law enforcement launched a manhunt for the founder in November 1984, when he fled after wounding a Portland FBI agent in a gunfight. Officials said Mathews was located at a residence outside of Smuggler’s Cove on Whidbey Island the following month.
“Following a 35-hour stand off, a gun battle ensued between Mathews, Seattle agents, and more than 75 other law enforcement officers,” FBI Seattle said. “Mathews died when the house caught on fire as a result of the gunfight.”
The agency reported that 23 members of The Order were indicted and arrested four months later, and 12 of them pleaded guilty. Others were convicted of charges including racketeering, conspiracy, counterfeiting, armed robbery and murder.
The thriller based on the group also features “Ready Player One” star Tye Sheridan and “Lovecraft Country” actress Jurnee Smollett. “The Order” was released in theaters on Dec. 6.
