Henry Cavill's Next TV Show Is Nerdy Passion Project Based on Popular Game
As the man who was once Superman and the Witcher, Henry Cavill knows his way around various realms of fantasy. Anyone who has interviewed Cavill knows he’s a real nerd’s nerd, with a deep knowledge of comics, fantasy novels and gaming. And now, Cavill is set to lead a new sci-fi series based on his favorite game—Warhammer 40,000.
According to Deadline, Cavill is developing a Warhammer 40,000 TV series for Amazon, with the hopes of launching a bigger franchise. For those who don’t know, Warhammer 40,000 is a strategy/battle game played primarily with miniatures. Set in the far-future, Warhammer takes place in a world in which human beings are at war with aliens and various monsters. The coolest part of the game is easily the detailed figures and vehicles, which, players tend to hand-paint themselves. As many other Warhammer players have done, Cavill refers to his unpainted Warhammer as a “grey pile of shame.”

For several years, Cavill has been very vocal about turning Warhammer into a media franchise, and now, it seems like it may actually happen. Created by GamesWorkshop, Warhammer has existed since 1987, with speciality shops devoted to Warhammer dotting several strip malls throughout the country. An even deeper-cut than Magic: The Gathering, the world of Warhammer has a massive following, hidden in plain sight.
Is it all enough to launch an epic sci-fi TV franchise? Maybe. But, if Henry Cavill’s Warhammer happens, it will have to appeal to more than just hardcore gamers. If anything, this is a moment for the franchise to reinvent itself, and become something brand new.
