LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A former Lafayette Christian Academy baseball coach accused of having sex with a student has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, authorities said.

Gregory Fontenot Jr., 35, pleaded guilty to one count of simple battery in connection with an incident in 2021.

He originally was charged with charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student. The other charges were dismissed by the district attorney's office.

Fontenot was sentenced to pay a $250 fine and $243 in court costs.

The former head baseball coach at LCA, who resigned from that post in 2021, previously faced similar charges in St. Landry Parish. Fontenot was arrested in April 2015 when he worked at Beau Chene High School, St. Landry Parish Sherrif Bobby Guidroz said. The charge he faced then was prohibited sexual contact between an educator and student.

Fontenot was acquitted of those charges and later requested expungement from his record.

He now lives in Florida, according to court records.
