New Report Debunks Popular Theory About Jerod Mayo’s Patriots Future

Jerod Mayo undoubtedly will be back for a second season with the Patriots, right? Not so fast.

That’s what Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard shared Tuesday following the team’s Week 14 bye.

Bedard said while he believes the chances are “likely” Mayo returns in 2025, he’s heard from “organizational sources” who believe Mayo’s Patriots need to be competitive in the final four games. If the Patriots aren’t competitive against the Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills (twice) and Los Angeles Chargers, there could be a shakeup.

“If they get blown out in all four games, I think all options are on the table,” one source told Bedard.

Bedard wrote: “According to multiple sources, if (Patriots owner Robert) Kraft comes to the realization he made the wrong choice with Mayo, he wouldn’t hesitate to rectify the situation. That Kraft’s ego and/or proving his gut decision on Mayo was correct would prevent Kraft from moving on after one season is false, according to team sources. Has it gotten to that point? No, but it could by the end of the season.”

The latter point has been a popular (and understandable) one. Media members and Patriots fans question whether Kraft, who compared his hiring of Mayo to his search for a wife, would tuck tail and admit wrong after just one year.

“As of the moment, yes, I do think there is something at stake for Jerod Mayo the final four games of the season,” Bedard doubled down when he appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz” on Tuesday afternoon. “I don’t think he is 100% safe. I’ve said this before, and I still think it’s in the same boat.”

Mayo deflected when he asked if Kraft assured the first-year head coach a second season. However, Mayo has stressed he’ll be a better coach in Year 2 than in Year 1.
