South Korean Defense Minister’s failed suicide attempt

0

South Korean media reported that the former defense minister of the country attempted suicide after being arrested and placed in custody.

A South Korean Ministry of Justice official confirmed that Kim Yong-hyun, the former defense minister and a close ally of President Yoon Suk-yeol, attempted suicide while in custody. However, the suicide attempt was unsuccessful.

Recently, a South Korean court issued a prison sentence for Kim Yong-hyun, accusing him of playing a role in declaring martial law by President Yoon Suk-yeol on December 3.

Shin Yong-hae, the head of the correctional center, informed lawmakers that Kim’s suicide attempt had failed and that his health condition was stable. Following the incident, Kim was transferred to a protective cell to prevent further harm.

This comes after Kim Yong-hyun resigned following the six-hour martial law, which was unanimously revoked by the country’s parliament, and then was arrested.

The government is expected to closely monitor his health and wellbeing moving forward.

This event marks a dramatic turn in the ongoing political tensions surrounding Kim’s involvement in the controversial martial law declaration. It remains to be seen how it will affect the broader political landscape in South Korea.
