Ange Postecoglou knows how to deal with Rangers

Ange Postecoglou is no stranger to Tottenham’s upcoming Glasgow opponents. Arriving at Celtic in the summer of 2021, after they had finished 25 points behind Rangers in the league, Postecoglou helped his side win the Scottish Premiership and League Cup in his first season, before completing the domestic treble in the second.

He has a good record against Rangers, winning six of the 11 matches his Celtic side played against them, which is over 50 per cent, and this included a 2-1 win in the Scottish League Cup final, so Postecoglou knows how to defeat them in the biggest games.

However, Postecoglou’s record at Ibrox is less convincing, with his former side winning just one of their four matches away to their fierce rivals when he was in charge, while they were defeated twice.

It is worth noting their heaviest defeat, a 3-0 loss, came after Celtic had already secured the league title and they did not field a full-strength team.

Ange Postecoglou previews his return to Glasgow

There will be no love lost between Rangers supporters and Postecoglou and like Tottenham’s trip to Galatasaray, a fiery atmosphere awaits them, while the Australian boss has also commented on an interesting fact about the difference between Rangers domestically and in Europe.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game, he said: “I’m looking forward to it. I had a great time up there in the two years I was there [at Celtic]. Fair to say, Ibrox can be fairly intense and I’m sure we’ll feel that.”

“But it’s a great stadium to play football in. The atmosphere, European nights. Even when I was there, they did awfully well in Europe – the first year I was there they got to the Europa League final.

“So you know how European nights, irrespective of their league form, they really rise for, so it’s a good challenge for us.

Rangers have a good record in the Europa League

Rangers are not having a great season, as they sit third in the Scottish Premiership, putting manager, Philippe Clement, under pressure. But despite some dodgy domestic form, they have shone in the Europa League, picking up 10 points from five matches and only losing once in a 4-1 home defeat to Lyon which they appear to have put behind them.

Tottenham and Rangers have actually only gone head-to-head twice in competitive fixtures, as well as a number of friendly matches over the years.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have picked up the same number of points as their hosts, but they have failed to win their two most recent matches in the competition and are without a win since they defeated Manchester City.

With Rangers back in form, scoring 14 goals in their past four matches and Tottenham looking at their weakest since Postecoglou arrived, Thursday’s clash is going to be a real test for Spurs.
