20 Chinese citizens killed in Pakistan since 2021: Pakistan Counter-Terrorism Department

0

The Pakistan Counter-Terrorism Department has reported that since 2021, 20 Chinese citizens have been killed and 34 others wounded in terrorist attacks in the country.

On Tuesday, December 10, Usman, head of the Counter-Terrorism Department, stated in a meeting of the National Assembly’s Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Committee that the security of Chinese citizens is a top priority for the Pakistani government.

The report highlights that at least 14 terrorist attacks targeting Chinese nationals have occurred in the provinces of Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during this period.

Usman further noted that currently, 20,000 Chinese citizens, including engineers and workers involved in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, are present in Pakistan.

This ongoing targeting of Chinese nationals in Pakistan has consistently drawn reactions from Chinese officials.

Previously, Jiang Zaidong, China’s Ambassador to Islamabad, condemned the “frequent attacks on Chinese citizens” and called for enhanced security measures to protect Chinese personnel and institutions in Pakistan. He emphasized that both countries could collaborate in combating terrorists targeting Chinese nationals.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), valued at an estimated $60 billion, involves thousands of Chinese workers engaged in various projects across Pakistan, making their security a critical concern for both nations.

The safety of Chinese citizens in Pakistan remains a significant issue, especially with the increasing number of terrorist attacks. Both governments face the urgent task of improving security and ensuring the protection of foreign nationals working on critical infrastructure projects like CPEC.

The ongoing partnership between China and Pakistan will be crucial in addressing these security challenges, as both countries must work together to counter terrorism and safeguard mutual interests in the region.
