UN Security Council to hold Meeting on Afghanistan tomorrow
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced that the Security Council meeting of the organization will begin tomorrow to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
“The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a session on Afghanistan tomorrow 12 December, at 10:00 hours New York local time (19:30 hours Kabul local),” a statement said.
In the statement on Wednesday, December 11, UNAMA mentioned that Rosa Otunbayeva, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of UNAMA, will deliver a speech during the meeting.
Earlier, the Security Council had announced that after the official meeting, closed-door discussions would also be held.
The statement also mentioned that Rosa Otunbayeva, along with Andres Montalvo Sosa, the Ecuadorian Ambassador and Chair of the Afghanistan Sanctions Committee, and a representative from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), will speak at the session.
While the agenda of the meeting has not been disclosed, various UN agencies in Afghanistan have warned about the worsening humanitarian crisis and human rights violations committed by the Taliban.
The UN Security Council’s meeting on Afghanistan is an important step in addressing the ongoing crisis in the country. The presence of key figures like Otenbaeva and the discussions behind closed doors will likely focus on potential solutions and international response to the growing challenges.
The outcomes of this meeting may influence the direction of future international aid and diplomatic efforts, particularly in light of the escalating humanitarian and human rights situation in Afghanistan.
