Hochul highlights refund proposal at Market 32

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- New York State leaders said they hear the concerns about the high cost of living. Gov. Kathy Hochul visited a Market 32 in Albany on Tuesday to highlight a plan to reduce the impact of inflation.

The governor has proposed a one-time payment for eligible New Yorkers using extra sales tax generated by the higher cost of everyday goods. One shopper said it would make a big difference.

"To have a boost of a check line that would make it easier to then put something toward another bill, or just, either way, that money would go for food, then the money would be a boost for other bills, too, and you mentioned relieving stress, and yeah, we could all use relief from stress, and it would go a long way," shopper Sally McKenna said.

For single people making up to $150,000 per year, the checks would be $300. For families earning up to $300,000 per year, the checks would be for $500, Hochul said.

The proposal still needs approval from lawmakers before it is finalized.
