NYCHA residents in Brooklyn left struggling following gas leak

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- There's been no gas service since October for more than a dozen apartments at an NYCHA building in Brooklyn after a gas leak.

Some residents fear repairs will not be complete until after the holidays.

Sandra Bradford lives at the Farragut houses in Fort Green and says she had a terrible Thanksgiving, eating a frozen dinner, because she can’t cook on her stove due to no gas service.

A National Grid spokesperson tells PIX11 News: “On Oct. 23, 2024, a leak was discovered on the internal house piping for 192 Sands St Apt 4E. National Grid crews secured service to the E-line for safety and informed building management that they would need to have a licensed plumber perform the needed repairs in order to return service. Once National Grid receives notification from building management that the required repairs have been made by a licensed plumber, crews can safely begin the process of service restoration.

A NYCHA spokesperson tells PIX11 News: “Gas service interruptions and restoration work are a matter of public safety and involve multiple partners and steps, including shutting off service, making necessary repairs, inspections, and coordinating with the service vendors, in order to safely restore service as quickly as possible. These processes are currently underway at 192 Sands Street."
