Kelvin Banks Jr. won't play for Texas in SEC title game

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Longhorns junior left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. won't play in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday against Georgia.

Banks suffered an ankle injury against Texas A&M early in the first quarter and hobbled off the field, returning to the sideline with a walking boot on. His status on the official SEC availability report was changed to game-time decision 90 minutes before the 3 p.m. kickoff, but he wasn't in full uniform during pregame warmups. He had been listed as questionable on the report all week.

Redshirt freshman Trevor Goosby filled in for Banks against the Aggies and played very well, helping Quintrevion Wisner rush for a career-high 186 yards during a 17-7 win in the Lone Star Showdown.

It's worth monitoring Quinn Ewers's ankle after he was limited in practice last week before the Texas A&M game. He had a 24-yard scramble in the first quarter that suggested his ankle was fine, but head coach Steve Sarkisian still used Arch Manning in red zone scenarios to not put Ewers in positions where a quarterback run was an option.

For Georgia, running back Trevor Etienne was removed from the injury report Saturday after being listed as questionable all week. He scored three touchdowns and rushed for 87 yards in a 30-15 win over the Longhorns on Oct. 19 in Austin.

The game is on ABC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
