Event Schedule For 2024 Winter Meetings
The 2024 Winter Meetings are right around the corner, taking place Monday through Wednesday in Dallas, Texas. The three-day long event always comes with excitement, fast-tracking free agent signings and trade acquisitions.
Last season, Juan Soto was the biggest acquisition when he was traded to the New York Yankees, and the season before it was the extension of Aaron Judge and the signings of Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts.
This year the excitement levels will match. Soto is a free agent and his decision may come in the following four days. Below is an outline of the events, which is prolonged Sunday with a Hall of Fame announcement.
Sunday, December 8
MLB’s 2024 Winter Meetings will kick off with an exciting Hall of Fame announcement. The Classic Baseball Era Committee will meet Sunday and determine whether or not any players on their ballot will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The announcement will take place on MLB Network at 7:30 PM ET.
The players eligible are Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, John Donaldson, Vic Harris, Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Dave Parker, and Luis Tiant. Candidates need 12 of 16 (75%) votes for induction. You can read more about each candidate by clicking this link.
Monday, December 9
There are no special events Monday, but the day will allow general managers, front offices, and agents to meet. Free agents will sign, players might be traded, and press conferences could be held for potential moves.
Tuesday, December 10
The MLB draft lottery will be announced on Tuesday. The Mets are slated for the 28th pick in the first round and are not in the lottery for the first overall pick. The leaders for the first pick are tied between the Rockies and Marlins (22.45%).
The Mets will pick 28th overall in every round of the draft. They will also receive a fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft from the Athletics due to their signing of Luis Severino.
Wednesday, December 11
The Rule 5 draft will be held on the final day of the Winter Meetings in Dallas. The Mets left Dom Hamel (No. 15) and Mike Vasil (No. 18) unprotected, leaving both eligible to be selected by other organizations.
Last season, the Mets selected Justin Slaten in the draft and then traded him to the Red Sox for lefty Ryan Ammons (1.33 ERA in Brooklyn last season).
In the minor league phase, the Mets were also active in the draft. They added Donovan Antonia (CIN) and Alan Perdomo (COL), and lost Brendan Hardy, Yeral Martinez, Tyler Thomas, Daison Acosta, and Benito Garcia.
