Ange Postecoglou has explained his decision to go over the away section at Bournemouth and reveals what his wife told him about his interaction with Spurs fans.
Unpleasant scenes after the final whistle at the Vitality Stadium
Ange Postecoglou and a lot of the Spurs players went over to the travelling section after their 1-0 loss against Bournemouth, and predictably, they were greeted by loud jeering.
Even worse, one could hear a couple of fans shouting personal abuse at the Tottenham head coach, but he was unfazed maintaining a stern expression and accepting the response he got.
Ange Postecoglou explains decision to go over to Spurs fans
The Tottenham boss has now revealed that he wanted to make the travelling fans heard after his side’s loss on Thursday.
When asked if he regretted reacting to the more abuse supporters, Postecoglou told Football.London: “No. They felt like they needed to give me feedback, so I thought I’d get close enough for them to make sure they were heard.
“Hopefully after 18 months, you’ve realised that I am who I am. I don’t really care. Whether people think I’m an easy target or, soft target. I’m going to shy away from it. I’ve fought my whole life and I’m not going to race down the tunnel because some people feel like they need to give me some direction.”
The 59-year-old insisted that he is not bothered that the frustration of some supporters spilled over, but confessed that his wife was not too happy with his decision to be receptive to the fans’ annoyance.
He added: “It doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t. From my perspective, what motivates me and what drives me on a daily basis is continually staying true to my values and what I believe is the right thing to do in every situation.
“Maybe people thought it wasn’t the right thing to do. My wife certainly didn’t. So I got some feedback there as well. But that’s ok. I’m not going to change. It’s who I am, mate. I’ve been like that my whole career and I won’t change.”
Postecoglou explains the gesture he made to the Spurs fans
Unlike some of his predecessors at Spurs, Postecoglou has repeatedly accepted responsibility for defeats and has shown that he is not one to deflect blame onto others.
The Tottenham head coach was seen pointing at himself when he went over to the fans on Thursday and he has now explained why he did that.
When asked about that gesture, he said: “It’s on me but also whatever you’ve got to direct, direct it at me. And I’m listening. I’m listening, I’m looking, I’m understanding.”
