Ange Postecoglou has provided a direct answer when asked if the current Tottenham squad is stronger than the one he had last season.

Tottenham’s injury woes have exposed their weaknesses

Spurs have had to deal with a spate of injuries over recent weeks and that has exposed the lack of depth in their squad.

Understandably, many Tottenham fans have pointed the finger at the club’s summer recruitment and have suggested that they did not do enough.

What has particularly angered some is the fact that the club spent big money on teenagers like Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, and Wilson Odobert, who have barely played.

However, Postecoglou, who signed off on the incomings and outgoings in the summer window, is adamant that the current Tottenham squad is stronger when everyone is fit.

The Tottenham head coach also defended the decision to sign young players, insisting that it was important to build for the future.

When asked if the current Spurs squad is stronger than the one he had last season, Postecoglou told Football.London: “If everyone was fit, yeah. Where we are now, no, but that’s pretty evident. Vicario, Van de Ven, Romero, Bentancur, Richarlison, Odobert, if five of those were available last night or four of those were available last night… Look the players who left, it wasn’t a slight on them.

“They were good, experienced players, absolutely, but we can’t change if I keep everyone, I can’t just keep adding to the squad without letting people go, and when they left we couldn’t replace like-for-like, I couldn’t let a 28-year-old go and sign a 28-year-old because that wasn’t where we were at.

“We had to sign younger players and start building, and in the perfect world, we wouldn’t have got the injuries and suspensions and illnesses that we have, and the squad would look a lot healthier, but where we are right now, we’re nowhere near the level we need to be.”

A perfect storm for Spurs and Ange Postecoglou

When one looks through the squad, there is actually decent cover in every position, but unfortunately for Spurs, a spate of injuries has occurred at the same time.

To compound matters, Rodrigo Bentancur’s suspension has also coincided with these injuries, thus making life even more complicated for Postecoglou.
