Assad’s family escapes to Russia as rebel forces advance: Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources, reported that members of the family of Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria, have left the country and moved to Russia.
According to the report, the wife and three children of Bashar al-Assad left Damascus for Moscow last week, following the rapid advance of the rebels toward the capital.
Syrian security officials and Arab officials have told the Wall Street Journal that Asma al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad’s wife, along with their three children, fled to Russia, while two of Asma al-Assad’s brothers went to the United Arab Emirates.
Previously, there were conflicting reports about Bashar al-Assad’s potential flight to Tehran, but both Syrian and Iranian officials have denied these claims.
Meanwhile, the rebels have claimed to have captured the city of Daraa, located 100 kilometers south of the capital, while the city of Homs in the north is also under siege by the rebels.
Earlier, the cities of Aleppo and Hama had already been completely captured by the rebels.
The movement of Bashar al-Assad’s family to Russia highlights the escalating pressure on the Syrian government. It also underscores the growing dominance of the rebel forces, especially in key regions close to the capital.
The conflict, which has been ongoing for years, continues to shift the balance of power in Syria, with the international community closely watching the developments.
As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how the Syrian government will respond to these territorial losses and the potential impact on Assad’s rule. The departure of his family to Russia could indicate a significant turning point in the ongoing civil war and the future of the Syrian regime.
