Daraa, fourth Syrian city, falls to rebels, bringing Damascus within reach

0

International media outlets have reported that rebels opposing the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria, have captured the city of Daraa.

Reuters has reported that the rebels entered Daraa on the morning of Saturday, December 7, and that the Syrian army withdrew from the city under an agreement.

Daraa is the fourth city to fall into rebel hands, and it was also the birthplace of the uprising against Bashar al-Assad’s government in 2011.

So far, the rebels have taken control of the cities of Aleppo, Hama, Homs, and Daraa.

Meanwhile, Syrian state television has reported that Russian-Syrian airstrikes have targeted rebel positions in the cities of Hama, Idlib, and Aleppo, resulting in the deaths of about 200 rebels.

It is noteworthy that the capture of Homs has enhanced the rebels’ ability to approach Damascus, Syria’s capital.

In the meantime, the Wall Street Journal has reported that Bashar al-Assad’s family has been moved to Russia.

Nevertheless, the governments of Iran, Iraq, and Russia have reaffirmed their support for Syria.

The continued advances of rebel forces highlight the mounting pressure on the Syrian government, particularly in strategic cities near the capital.

The growing rebel control over key territories underscores the shifting dynamics of the conflict.

As the Syrian government faces increasing isolation, the role of its allies, particularly Russia and Iran, will be crucial in determining the future course of the war.
