Iran to send Missiles and Drones to Syria, increase military support for Assad
Iran plans to send missiles and drones to Syria and increase the number of its military advisers to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his battle against rebel forces.
Reuters reported on Friday, December 6, citing a senior Iranian security official, that Tehran is currently providing Syria with satellite support and intelligence.
The official added, “Tehran will likely need to send military equipment, including missiles and drones, to Syria. Tehran has taken all necessary measures to increase the number of its military advisers in Syria and deploy its forces.”
The official also mentioned, “Iran and Syria are united in preventing the rebels from advancing towards major cities, and Syria has not yet requested ground forces from Tehran.”
According to the source, Russia, Syria’s key ally, has decided to escalate its airstrikes against Assad’s opposition forces.
This comes at a time when Turkey, a NATO member, continues to support both the political and armed opposition to Assad’s regime. Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that his country supports the peaceful advance of rebel forces in Syria.
The shifting dynamics in Syria have raised concerns among international powers, with each country having its own vested interests in the outcome of the war.
The involvement of both regional and global powers signals a further escalation in the conflict. While Turkey’s role remains significant, Iran’s increasing military presence in Syria could exacerbate tensions in the region.
