Trump may still face reckoning over Jan. 6 attack with 8 civil suits still 'alive': report

While Donald Trump has successfully evaded legal accountability so far over his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, that doesn’t mean the incoming president won’t find himself in court over the matter.

Eight civil lawsuits accusing Trump of inciting MAGA followers to storm the Capitol are “still alive and moving forward” as they work their way through the federal court in D.C., according to The New York Times.

And they could hit Trump's wallet – and perhaps even his reputation.

“The cases are not criminal, but if they end up at trial, they could result not only in financial damages imposed on Mr. Trump, but also in the public airing of evidence about Jan. 6 that has not taken place — and may never — in the context of his dismissed or delayed criminal trials,” according to the Times.

The lawsuits, filed mostly by police officers and members of Congress, seek damages for “conspiracy to violate civil rights, incitement to riot, battery, assault, disorderly conduct and infliction of emotional distress, among other things,” the report said. The plaintiffs said they were harmed by the chaotic events that unfolded that day when a mob forced entry into the building while the certification of the 2020 election was underway.

“I believe these eight cases remain the only matters in which plaintiffs are seeking both damages from President Trump and to hold him accountable for his role in the events of Jan. 6,” Joseph Sellers, a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs, told the Times.

Still, there’s no guarantee a jury will ever hear any of the civil suits, although they have already “survived an immunity review by two different courts,” the report noted.
