Sports briefs: Redwood rolls in season opener

Sam Gersch scored twice and Masa Fujita had two assists as the Redwood High boys soccer team opened the season with a 6-1 tournament win against Rio Americano on Friday.

Ike Gebhard, Kamran Madani, Ben Sherry, and Eddie Diaz also scored for the Giants (1-0-0), who face Woodcreek at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Redwood also got assists from Madani, Sherry, Nick Hartung, and Justin Shern.

  • Marin Catholic snagged its first win of the season, taking down Casa Grande 2-1 on Thursday night. MC (1-1-0) lost to University 1-0 earlier in the week. Dylan Hyman had a goal and an assist to lead MC. Hyman scored five minutes in on an assist by Enrique Guzman. Casa Grande tied the game on a penalty kick. Hyman assisted the winning goal, scored by Tallan Clahan in the 60th minute.
  • Kian Caveney and Aidan Whitmore scored two goals apiece as San Marin rolled to a 7-1 win against Vallejo on Friday night. Edwin Lopez, Joshua Calderon, and Ivan Gomez also had goals for the Mustangs (2-0-0), who defeated Petaluma 2-1 earlier in the week. San Marin got assists from Buddy Nebb, Chris Martin, Lopez, Gomez, Whitmore, and Kiya Namiranian.

Girls soccer

Ellie Seymore scored twice as Marin Catholic shut out Benicia 3-0 on Friday. Alina Franchetti opened the scoring off an assists from Sloane Carey then Seymore scored following assists by Ava Korich and Lana Whilborg, respectively. Kate Batdorf was stellar in the midfield, according to coach Isaiah Schwerin. Goalie Finn Seymore got her second shutout of the season for MC (2-0-0) playing behind the back four of Siena White, Savannah Browne, Lexi Ferguson, and Brooklyn Blackman.

  • Josie Quinby had a hat trick and assisted another goal as Terra Linda rolled past Santa Rosa 7-1 on Thursday night. Rashell Diaz and freshman Nina Iyer both had a goal and an assist for TL (1-0-1). The Trojans’ other goals came from Daisy Ruiz and Dyanna Perez while Sienna Economou and Isabelle Rosetti provided assists.
  • Jaela Brown continued her big week with a goal and an assist for San Rafael in a 3-0 victory against Ygnacio Valley on Thursday night. Brown scored four goals in San Rafael’s win on Tuesday. Ryder Higgins Jones and Myrna Escamilla also scored for the Bulldogs (2-0-0). Arlin Guzman and Darby Fones also had assists.
  • Luna Diaz netted the only goal of the game, unassisted, to lift Branson (3-0-0) to a 1-0 road win against Petaluma on Thursday night.
  • Disa Doan was one of the bright spots for Novato (0-1-0) in a 9-0 loss to Piner on Friday.

College volleyball

Former Marin Catholic standouts Kari Geissberger and Leah Wilton-LaBoy helped Oklahoma outlast UTEP in five sets in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Geissberger had 11 kills for the Sooners while Wilton-LaBoy had an ace and a dig. Oklahoma, a No. 8 seed, moves into a round-of-32 match at 4 p.m. Saturday and awaits the winner between No. 1 Pittsburgh and Morehead State.

Another former MC standout, Tehani Ulufatu, had 10 digs for Baylor as the Bears took Dayton to the limit before falling in five sets in a second-round match on Friday.

North Carolina State, with former San Rafael High standout Mary Healy on the roster, lost its opening match in three sets to Florida on Friday.
